Summer Happenings…

I just reunited with Sibyl Kempson and Graham Reynolds to work on The Securely Conferred Vouchsafed Keepsakes of Maery S. at New Dramatists.  It’s a sort of kaleidoscopic meditation on Mary Shelley’s life, monsters and the outdoors.  We had a week to work primarily on music but we also managed to try out some new theatrical conceits that proved super fertile during our concert reading.  It was a treat to have so much time to work with artists I admire and adore.

I’m thrilled to begin work on another musical this week at Ars Nova.  Created by a wildly talented couple–The Bengsons–with additional lovely thoughtful work on the book by Sarah Gancher, it’s called The Lucky Ones and is being directed by Anne Kaufman.  I love working with Anne as much as I love watching her work.  So I’m very excited to be in this room and sing these songs and return to the freedom and delicious that is Ars Nova.  Last time I performed there it was in the original production of Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812 so partnering with them again feels like home.

I’m also doing a short film with my friend Shane Kearns.  He wrote the script, won a grant from BMCC and is hard at work to make his vision a reality.  It’s called Remedial Love and we’ll star in it together.  I’ll share our fruits as soon as I can.  Stay tuned cause I’ve got another play on the horizon…

Right Now…

I’m very excited to share that the feature I shot with Roberto Faenza in 2010 titled Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You was finally released in the US.  It played for a limited run at Village East Cinema earlier this month. It’s a tender coming of age story with a stellar cast (ie: Deborah Ann Woll, Lucy Liu, Ellen Burstyn, Marcia Gay Harden, etc.).  Seeing myself onscreen was surreal and exciting and sobering and all kinds of things I did and didn’t expect.  All in all though I felt a real sense of pride and accomplishment to have helped bring the story to life with such an impressive group of people.  Feel free to click the link below for more information.

And guess what?  Ready to smile?

I’m in an opera y’all! It’s the world premiere of Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812 and it’s based on part of Tolstoy’s War and Peace. I know that might sound somewhat inaccessible, but I promise you it’s an exciting night of theater filled with delightful music.  The audience is transported to another time and place altogether upon entering the theater; Ars Nova has transformed their space into a Russian supper club complete with complementary vodka and pirogies!  The action takes place all around you as the performers and band are spread out around the space– so your auditory experience changes based on where you sit.  Musically, it’s the most ambitious undertaking I’ve ever been a part of.  Also, singing with live instruments is a divine pleasure that every human being should experience!  We’ve had a wonderful time creating the world that is this play together and I am very proud to share it.

The response from critics and audiences alike has been so amazing that our show sold out only a few days after opening!  So we’re extending a week!  Tickets go onsale midday on 10/24.  If you’re interested in coming please click the link below.
